MRIGlobal Volunteers Support STEM Family Night

Community Outreach Engages Young Students

For the third year in a row, several volunteers from MRIGlobal recently volunteered their time to support a STEM Family Night at Primitivo Garcia Elementary School, a Title I school in Kansas City, Missouri. Volunteers gave of their time to plan, prepare, practice, and then perform several scientific demonstrations for children in grades Kindergarten through 5th, and their families.

This outreach project has been supported financially each of the past three years by our Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging committee. An objective of MRIGlobal’s DIB Committee is to increase outreach efforts to cultivate community relationships that serve and support current and future STEM leaders. By focusing outreach through programs that engage young students, we can help broaden diversity in STEM.

As the students would attest, the STEM night demonstrations were a huge success! Demonstrations included the creation of elephant toothpaste, oobleck, a density column, an oscillating chemical clock, “flaming gummy bears,” and homemade ice cream made with dry ice.
