How Biocontainment Technology Can Aid Early Stage Outbreaks

Now more than ever, we understand the importance of early epidemic prevention before an infectious disease spreads into a global pandemic. At the heart of prevention lies the ability to contain dangerous viruses and other microorganisms while transporting patients to safety.

To answer this need, MRIGlobal designed and built the Containerized Bio-Containment System (CBCS), a flyable biocontainment unit that fits four patients and four caregivers. The system has multiple uses to help stop the spread of infectious diseases. Learn more about how our biocontainment technology can help with early stage outbreaks.

Transfer sick highly infectious patients to medical care

We initially created the CBCS in response to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. The systems were designed to transfer Americans with highly infectious disease back to the United States for treatment. The CBCS keeps the virus contained within the unit; patients could receive medical care; and the flight crew would be safe from infection, too.

Quarantine infected patients from healthy patients

During the early stages of the COVID-19 outbreak, our biocontainment technology helped with the evacuation of cruise ship passengers docked in Japan. The ship had been quarantined for 10 days, and needed a safe way to evacuate its passengers. In this case, patients were safely transported somewhere they could receive proper medical attention.

Considerations for the CBCS during outbreaks

Because the CBCS holds only four patients at a time, it is best used in early stages of an epidemic, rather than a larger spread pandemic. However, it maintains full biocontainment, so the CBCS can be used to prevent the spread of highly infectious diseases such as COVID-19. For example, if someone is presenting symptoms, the CBCS could be used to quarantine that person to contain the disease spread.
