Statistical Analysis
Excellent research results requires accurate experimental design and analysis. Our statisticians and data analysts are experts at traffic safety modeling and evaluations, and it shows in our results.
Our experts identify relationships between roadway variables and safety and operational performance. We apply the latest transportation modeling techniques for crash prediction and determine the impacts of individual contributors on crash likelihood using field data, GIS mapping, and alternative big data sources. If you have a transportation safety question, we can design an evaluation to answer it.
WHAT WE TEST
We conduct before-after evaluations of safety measures; develop crash prediction models, safety performance functions and crash modification factors/functions; and create analytical tools for FHWA, NCHRP, AASHTO, and state highway agencies.
MRIGlobal evaluates safety treatments to determine their impact on various crash types and severity levels.
MRIGlobal develops statistical models that predict the crash frequency for an existing or proposed roadway segment or intersection. We use local data to calibrate for local conditions such as crash reporting threshold, seasonal variations, and differences in driver behavior. This enables our clients to more effectively use the national SPFs for safety analyses and evaluations.
We gather data from a number of sources, including:
- DOT crash and volume databases
- Public databases of population and political boundaries
- Independently collected bike and pedestrian volumes
- Roadway inventory databases
- Land use and economic development data
- Naturalistic driving study data
- Data reduced from field or desktop observations
We standardize, control for quality, and place in databases ready for use in statistical analyses.
We use a variety of charts and graphs to illustrate trends, patterns, groupings, and outliers to emphasize key points in our reports and guidance documents.
Our Staff
The scientific rigor of our data analysts and statisticians sets us apart.
MRIGlobal is internationally recognized for expertise in traffic safety and operations evaluations of roadways, due in part to the scientific rigor our data analyst and statisticians apply to our research. We have extensive experience in experimental design, sample size estimation, data collection from many different sources, conduct of data quality control checks, conduct of statistical analyses, and predictive model development. Statisticians in MRIGlobal’s Transportation Research Center are actively involved in every project.
