The Lake Victoria Islands Minigrid Project investigated the feasibility of deploying hybrid solar minigrid power systems to increase electricity access to the areas of Tanzania not currently connected to the national electric power transmission system. A variety of feasibility study topics and issues in the Lake Victoria islands region were evaluated in the project. The project scope also incorporated the design of a pilot minigrid on a selected island as part of the feasibility evaluation. The pilot was intended to facilitate planning of a commercial-scale project serving up to eight communities with a total population of approximately 37,000. These off-grid power systems, when implemented in the future, would feature solar energy generation with battery energy storage and diesel back-up. The project was supported by a grant from the U.S. Trade and Development Agency to help advance the goals of the Power Africa Initiative in sub-Saharan Africa.
