Research Leads to Effective Pedestrian and Bicycle Facilities
MRIGlobal performs research to find effective ways to balance conflicting needs of pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists on public rights-of-way, with a goal of accommodating all modes of travel–safely and efficiently.
Recent legislation requires all transportation agencies to accommodate walking and bicycling in routine planning, design, construction, operations, and maintenance activities. MRIGlobal’s expertise includes development of design criteria for pedestrian and bicycle facilities, including trail-highway crossings and channelized roadways.

MRIGlobal’s Pedestrian, Bicycle Facilities Successes:
- Planning and Design: MRIGlobal has served as the technical editor for the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Guide for the Planning, Design, and Operation of Pedestrian Facilities and for the AASHTO Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets, commonly known as the Green Book.
- Evaluation: MRIGlobal has evaluated pedestrian/motorist conflicts for right-turn maneuvers at driveways and pedestrian/bicyclist/motorist conflicts in channelized right-turn roadways.
